I CAN OFFER YOU TWO THINGS:

1. I can speak at an evangelistic event that you have arranged. This could be anything from a guest service (for all-ages or adults only), either in church or open-air; an Alpha supper or similar event; the Alpha teaching on the Holy Spirit over a day or weekend, or any of the individual Alpha talks; a men's breakfast; youth events - in fact pretty much any event you need a guest speaker for!

I make use of lots of stories and illustrations, drawn both from my own life experiences, as well as other sources, and include lots of humour. I aim to be relevant, contemporary and challenging in my presentation of the gospel and of the person of Jesus.

2. I can work with your church to encourage and motivate the people of God to be more effective in reaching the community with the Good News of Jesus Christ. This could be anything from:

- preaching at a morning or evening service;

- holding a training day or course;

- or working with you over a period of time, either to review your church's strategy for evangelism, or to plan and execute a period of mission. As an example the process of consultancy might be spread over a year and could look something like this:

I will always seek to tailor-make what I do to your particular circumstances and context, but below you will find details of some of the material that I have presented in the past. (Click on a title for more information)

Are we Good Shepherds?

Jesus described himself as the Good Shepherd, as the one who gathered and welcomed the sheep. It is all too easy only to put ourselves in the position of the 'sheep' - as those who are being welcomed by Jesus. But Jesus also expects us to take on the role of 'Shepherd' - as those who reach out to, and gather in, those in the community who do not yet know him. This teaching was used in the context of a Church weekend to encourage the church to reflect on how effective it was at being the 'Good Shepherd' in their community.

Signs of Life

What are some of the 'signs of life' in a spiritually healthy church? Using the experience of Mary in Luke 1:26-38 I offer five suggestions: 1. Listening to God; 2. Being prepared to change; 3. Having a shared vision; 4. Seeing the future with eyes of faith; 5. Allowing the Holy Spirit freedom to work. The material has been presented in a single sermon, and also as a series of five sessions during a week at Lee Abbey.

My God is so small, so weak and so feeble!

Most of us will have sung the song, 'My God is so strong, so big and so mighty' at some point in our lives! Why then, if God is all those things, is the church in the west seemingly so weak and ineffective. I suggest that the answer may lie in a lack of understanding about the nature of God (our vision of Him is often too small, leading to a small vision of what he can do); and a lack of understanding about our true position as Christians. I explore the nature of discipleship and encourage a greater vision of what God is seeking to do in the world, and the role that Christians have to play in that.

Filling a Pew or Building the Kingdom

It has been observed that the church is often like a football match - a few people, desperately in need of a rest, doing everything, watched by a crowd desperately in need of exercise! How do we encourage the 'passive majority' to discover their true calling and gifting, and so take their proper place in building the Kingdom of God? We explore the way in which Jesus called, equipped and commissioned his disciples, and the way in which the Kingdom of God grows naturally when we build it His way.

Help! My Church is Irrelevant!

There are many in the church who despair at the declining numbers regularly attending their services, but who are at a loss to know what to do to reverse this trend. We explore some of the reasons why the church seems irrelevant to many in society; and look at how a local church may reflect on its life and witness, and make changes that will allow more people to discover Jesus for themselves. There are lots of practical ideas as well as some principles to work from.
